5th Anniversary Showcase
To celebrate our 5th anniversary, we returned to where it all started - just a few steps away from what was formerly the Currency Exchange Café at The Green Line Performing Arts Center.
The program's theme was Home, where we used the music of Black composers to speak to various interpretations of Home.
The anniversary ensemble comprised of Caitlin Edwards on violin, Khelsey Zarraga on violin, Wilfred Farquharson on viola, and Tahirah Whittington on cello.
Kicking off the evening was a collaboration with Puppeteer Sam Lewis with the telling of Grandpa James with a special commission by Ahmed Al Abaca.
We also commissioned youth composer Jonathan Miller with his compelling piece, The Home: Pain & Progression. We premiered Atlanta-based composer Lauren McCall's "the starting place..." another selection inspired by her family and the feelings of Home.
During this program, we also performed Sam Cooke’s "A Change is Gonna Come" arranged by Joel Thompson for the first time, accompanied by the photography we curated from 11 Black photographers nationwide. We also highlighted the many emotions of Home with Jessie Montgomery's "Break Away."
It was a night of celebration and joy as we celebrated 5-years of D-Composed. But, of course, we had to end the night in true D-Composed fashion, with an arrangement by Yelley Taylor of Cameo's Candy.
